DEFY
DEFY Composite Deck Sealer
DEFY Composite Deck Sealer is a clear sealer built to prevent black stains from returning while defending against water damage, fungi, and harmful UV rays. This VOC-compliant, water-based sealer uses zinc nano-particle technology with over 30 trillion particles per square feet of coverage to block the sun's damaging effects, much like sunscreen protection for your skin. The result? Your composite deck stays protected from color fade, moisture, and fungal growth season after season.
This clear deck sealer preserves your investment without hiding the natural beauty of your composite surface. For best results, clean your deck first with DEFY Composite Deck Cleaner to restore the surface before application.
DEFY Extreme Composite Deck Sealer is available in a crystal clear finish and is designed to be used on exterior wood surfaces including:
- composite decks
- all natural wood surfaces
Before using DEFY Extreme Composite Deck Sealer, clean the deck with DEFY Composite Deck Cleaner. This will generally clean and restore previously treated surfaces to their original appearance. The surface should be recoated when graying initially starts to appear.

DEFY Extreme Composite Deck Sealer is an extremely durable clear finish that helps prevent the return of black stains on composite decks as well as protect against the damaging effects of water and UV radiation on composite wood surfaces. This water-based product is fortified with zinc nano-particles, a natural deterrent to recurring black stains. It protects your wood by blocking out the sun's harmful UV rays, helping protect your composite deck from fading, graying, and color loss.
LIMITATIONS: This product is not designed for use on new, composite lumber. New, composite lumber does not typically need to be sealed and is not porous enough to accept this type of product. Over time, as the surface begins to weather and starts to absorb water, it can be sealed with this product. To ensure proper absorbancy, do a water test per label instructions below.
SURFACE PREPARATION
STRIP: Do not use DEFY Extreme Composite Deck Sealer over painted or varnished surfaces. These surfaces must be stripped prior to application of the product.
CLEAN: Composite wood surface must be clean, porous, and dry before applying DEFY Extreme Composite Deck Sealer. Use DEFY Composite Deck Cleaner to remove mildew stains, graying & other foreign matter that might block surface pores and interfere with product penetration. Rinse thoroughly with garden hose or power washer (maximum 1200 p.s.i.).
APPLICATION
WEATHER CONDITIONS: Surface and air temperatures should be between 45°F and 95°F. Avoid application in direct sunlight. Although surface may be slightly damp, do not apply to wet or water saturated surfaces, or when rain is expected within 12 hours.
WATER TEST: After allowing the surface to thoroughly dry from cleaning, sprinkle a few drops of water on the surface. It should begin to penetrate within a few seconds. If it doesn't, then don't apply the finish. The composite lumber is either not dry enough or not porous enough to accept the finish correctly. Test a small area before starting general application to assure desired results.
MIX WELL: Shake or stir contents before and periodically during use. Do not thin product.
PROTECT ADJACENT AREAS: Use plastic, cardboard, and/or drop cloths to protect all adjacent non-targeted surfaces such as siding, windows, masonry, plant life, etc. from overspray and runoff. Immediately remove overspray from non-targeted areas with soap and water. Overspray that is allowed to dry will be difficult to remove; dried product cannot be removed from concrete and masonry.
USE THE RIGHT EQUIPMENT: Hand brushes should be high quality nylon or polyester. A pad applicator or deck brush may also be used. For large areas, a pump-up or airless sprayer may be used. If using an airless sprayer, use tips between .011 and .015, and use the lowest pressure that achieves a uniform spray pattern to minimize fogging and overspray. When spraying, always back brush to ensure a uniform application, and to break the surface tension of the composite material so the stain will penetrate deeper and last longer.
DECKS: DEFY Extreme Composite Deck Sealer can be applied to all natural and composite wood surfaces. Start by applying DEFY Extreme Composite Deck Sealer to the railings, benches, and undersides of upper level decks (only one coat is required on undersides). Once underside is treated, immediately brush out all overspray, drips, etc. Treat horizontal surfaces last. When treating horizontal composite deck surfaces, only a single coat of material is required. For natural wood surfaces, apply two coats of sealer, waiting approximately 10-20 minutes between coats. Brush product into surface working out all drips, puddles, or areas of overspray before product dries. Do not over apply finish. To avoid the possibility of peeling, apply only as much finish as the deck can easily absorb. A sure indication of over application is a shiny appearance. Complete entire sections or to a natural break before allowing to dry. Never break in the middle of a board. Thoroughly coat the ends of boards to prevent water penetration.
VERTICAL SURFACES: Start from the bottom and work up. Treat the entire length of a board before moving up. If necessary, brush or feather in to avoid lap marks. Brush in product before it dries and work out drips, runs, or overspray.
DRY TIME: To touch, 2 to 6 hours depending on temperature and humidity. Allow 24 hours for deck to completely cure before using.
CLEAN-UP: Clean tools and equipment immediately after each use with soap and water.
COVERAGE: One gallon of DEFY Extreme Composite Deck Sealer will cover approximately 200 - 300 sq. ft. per coat, depending on wood texture and porosity.
PRECAUTIONS
May cause an allergic skin reaction. Keep out of reach of children. Avoid breathing fumes, dust, mist, spray, vapor. Wear eye protection, protective clothing, and protective gloves. Dispose of contents/container to comply with applicable local, national and international regulation.
FIRST AID
IF INHALED: Move the affected person away from the contaminated area and into the fresh air. If symptoms persist, seek medical advice. SKIN CONTACT: Wash off immediately with soap and plenty of water. Obtain medical attention if irritation persists. EYE CONTACT: Immediately flush eyes thoroughly with water for at least 15 minutes. Remove contact lenses, if present and easy to do. Continue rinsing. Seek medical attention if irritation persists. INGESTION: If swallowed, rinse mouth with water (only if the person is conscious). Do NOT induce vomiting unless directed to do so by a physician. If the person is fully conscious, make him/her drink water. Never give an unconscious person anything to drink. FAQs
When you've been making wood stain products as long as we have, you get used to answering similar questions. So we've gathered some of our most frequently asked questions for you here.
If you can't find the answer you're looking for below, we have more FAQ's here. Our blog is also has helpful resources and videos designed to help homeowners with every type of wood stain project.
CLEANING & PREPARATION
Yes. Before applying any deck sealer, use DEFY Composite Deck Cleaner to remove dirt, mildew, and debris from the wood surface. This opens up the pores and allows the sealer to penetrate properly for maximum protection. A clean surface means better adhesion and longer-lasting results.
DEFY Composite Deck Sealer should not be applied over painted or varnished surfaces. If your deck has existing wood stain or deck stain that's holding up, use DEFY Stain Stripper first. This clear sealer is made for bare or previously sealed composite and wood surfaces.
The answer varies based on the current condition of your wood. If you do decide to pressure wash your deck, use pressure between 1,000 or 1,200 psi. Also be sure to work with the grain and never against it, as it will cause damage to the wood's surface and splinters.
If you are using an oil-based stain, definitely. You can use DEFY stains, which are water-based products, even when the surface is slightly damp. With oil based stains, wood must be bone-dry before you can begin staining. However, DEFY stains are water-based, so you can use them even when the surface is slightly damp.
TOOLS & APPLICATION
Apply when temperatures are between 45°F and 95°F. Avoid application in direct sunlight and check relative humidity levels. Don't apply when rain is expected within 12 hours. The wood surface can be slightly damp but never saturated.
Dry time is 2-4 hours to the touch (above 45°F), but allow a full 24 hours before resuming normal foot traffic. This curing period lets the sealer bond properly to your deck surface.
Absolutely. While designed for composite materials, this clear wood sealer also works on natural wood surfaces including pressure-treated wood. It provides excellent UV protection and guards against moisture on both composite and natural wood deck applications.
This sealer is formulated for composite and wood decking surfaces. For pool deck areas, outdoor furniture, or concrete surface applications, test a small area first. The product bonds best with porous surfaces that can absorb the sealer properly. It is not an acrylic sealer and works differently on non-wood materials.
You can, but we don't recommend it. Paint rollers were designed for thick paint, not water-based wood stains. Using a roller will often simply push the stain around on the surface and not force it into the pores. The best tool for the job varies by the type of job. For decks, the quickest and easiest method to apply DEFY deck stain is with a "car wash" brush. Some have handles and some are handheld and they can be found in most home improvement stores.
When using a semi-transparent DEFY stain (Essential, Extreme or Ultra), only apply as much stain as the wood can absorb easily. If any puddles form during your staining process, be sure to brush them out to disperse the puddle.
DEFY Essential and Extreme stains have a flat finish, so if a gloss has formed on the surface the stain has been over-applied. Over time, it will be likely to peel. Even after two coats, your deck should still have a flat finish.
With DEFY Ultra stains, two coats will result in a satin finish. One coat will appear flat. A glossy appearance, would still indicate an over-application.
CARE & MAINTENANCE
That’s easy! Clean your deck with DEFY Wood Brightener, which will give it a boost in appearance. You can also apply one, light coat of new stain once you've brightened.
DEFY uses zinc nano-particle technology to reflect harmful UV rays from the sun, similar to how sunscreen protects your skin. This UV protection prevents color fading, graying, and deterioration caused by direct sunlight, keeping your deck boards looking fresh longer.
A deck sealer like DEFY Composite provides clear protection without adding color, preserving the existing look. A deck stain adds color while protecting. Options include semi-transparent stain, semi-transparent deck stain, semi-solid stain, and solid stain depending on how much wood grain you want visible. DEFY also offers custom colors and siding stain options for other projects.
